No exemplo do servidor HTTP de lata de spray, quando executo o servidor, não vejo nenhuma mensagem "Encadernada" aparecendo no log:

Minha pergunta é principalmente por curiosidade, como é que o Bound
mensagem é tratada no exemplo? É algum tipo de registro que os engole ou algo mais?

na tua Main
:
IO(Http).tell(Http.Bind(handler, interface = DOMAIN, port = PORT), sender = handler)
E então lidar Bound
mensagem no seu WebService:

No seu caso você está usando
def !(message: Any)(implicit sender: ActorRef = Actor.noSender): Unit
e não há remetente implícito no escopo de Main
